Nearly 70 years ago, the last B-17 lifted into the air to join the largest air armada ever to fill the skies during WWII, but on Friday June 05, the four giant Wright-Cyclone engines of Texas Raiders, a fully restored B-17 Flying Fortress will be flying into Waco, Texas to reunite veterans from that historic era with this WWII bomber. Of the 12,731 B-17s built across the U.S. only 9 are currently flying – including Texas Raiders which is part of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). The Heart of Texas Air Show, will feature this iconic B-17 June 06 and 07 as a performer at TSTC (Texas...
Edited from a Report by Rob Duncan, TBM Avenger Maintenance Officer for the CAF Rocky Mountain Wing
Have you ever had a poorer relative drop by for a “short visit” that ended staying a full year… and beyond? This is strikingly similar a situation that the Commemorative Air Force’s Airbase Arizona is currently enduring, although it’s also a perfect demonstration of why the Airbase concept is so worthwhile. The CAF Rocky Mountain Wing’s damaged TBM-3 Avenger appeared on their tarmac back in March 2014 with a bent wing and a “few small wrinkles” in her chin and belly. Everybody was wi...

CAF’s P-51 Pays A Personal Tribute at Arsenal of Democracy
When the CAF members travel to airshows, fly-ins and celebrations they hear some of the greatest stories of “why” someone wants to visit or fly in a warbird. Sometimes it’s a bucket list item after a long career of flying airliners, a log book entry for future bragging rights, a childhood dream or someone who last sat in one of these historic aircraft in their youth while serving their country 70 years ago. CAF Col Orin “Butch” Summy volunteered at Culpeper Airport for Arsenal Of Democracy. He heard many stories throughout ...
Arsenal of Democracy is spelled with three Ps

Preparedness and professionalism saved the day when a mishap occurred during the Arsenal of Democracy Flyover (click HERE for the media coverage). Those of us who belong to the National Capitol Squadron (NCS) believe that being ready was the key but there was a third "P" that had a role: it was providential that a graduate of our Youth Maintenance Program was on the scene to help.
During the Flyover, the Fighter Factory TBM Avenger developed a hydraulic line rupture and diverted to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. N...

By Dan Newcomb, PBJ Restoration Crew
When Norman Glen Ewers turned 18, he wanted to fly but did not have any college credits. When he discovered a Navy recruitment program, which he did qualify for, he immediately enlisted. He was trained as a Naval Aviation Cadet, but was assigned as a U.S. Marine Corps pilot.
"Nuggets," at his first billet, heard the rumor that they would be flying P-38s - or, anyway, a twin-engine airplane. They were sent to Kansas City to pick up brand new North American PBJ-1D Mitchell bombers. Since Norman had two weeks seniority, he was designated aircraft comma...
The Commemorative Air Force’s Coyote Squadron in Corsicana, Texas has recently added a former Royal Navy Stinson Reliant Mk.I to its small fleet, having acquired it from another CAF squadron in North Carolina. The aircraft, bearing its original Royal Navy serial number, FB605 is essentially an uprated version of the Stinson AT-19/UC-81 which served in the US military during the war, and itself a derivative of the civilian Stinson Reliant. Stinson’s factory in Detroit, Michigan built 500 of them exclusively for the Royal Navy under the Lend-Lease program. The type served in many roles...
