A Special Bell 47 Ride For Deserving Mississippi Resident
Madison, MS (June 21, 2025) - The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Mississippi Wing and CAF Bayou State Escadrille came together recently to give one very special guest the ride of a lifetime.
On June 21, Mississippi Wing members gathered at Bruce Campbell Field for a special hands-on training day led by members of the Bayou State Escadrille. The purpose was to prepare Mississippi Wing volunteers to assist with the Unit’s Bell 47 (OH-13) helicopter tour and ride operations at future events. Once the training wrapped up, they opened to the public for a Rides Day, and there were more than 40 visitors eager to experience a flight in the iconic aircraft.
Among all those who came out that day, one visitor touched everyone’s hearts.

The following weekend, Doug Williams brought his daughter Esther to the event where he would be given his ride. When a Unit member suggested Doug invite someone along for the ride, his answer was obvious. “The first person who came to mind was my daughter, Esther,” Doug said. “She’s always brave and eager to try new things, so I knew she’d be the perfect co-pilot for the adventure.” And just like that, Doug, Esther, and CAF pilot Mark Turner were off on their memorable flight.
Esther is a strong and joyful young woman who has overcome many challenges in her life. Adopted from China at the age of 13 by Doug and Elaine, Esther lives with physical disabilities that limit the use of her arms and legs, along with significant cognitive delays. But her spirit shines brightly. “Despite these challenges, Esther has a wonderful personality and an unforgettable smile,” Doug shared. “She is kind, caring, and incredibly brave. Esther loves Jesus, and she’s always excited to try new things and meet new people. She brings light and love wherever she goes.”
The helicopter ride was meaningful for both father and daughter. “Esther and I love spending time together and trying new things, so this experience was truly special,” Doug said. “Sharing a helicopter ride made Father’s Day even more meaningful—it wasn’t just a gift; it was a memory we created together. Being able to enjoy that kind of adventure with one of my children is something I’ll always treasure.” For the CAF members involved, moments like this embody the heart of their mission.
“This is why our organization thrives,” said CAF Colonel Jack Welch. “It means a lot to me to help create memories that stick with people—a moment that lifts them up. It’s powerful to know you created a positive emotion in someone.”
Welch added, “This ride connected people to our mission. We honored those who flew M*A*S*H* choppers in Korea, inspired someone like Esther, and reminded the community that no one should ever believe someone who says you can't do something.”
Both the CAF Mississippi Wing and CAF Bayou State Escadrille were honored to be part of this special ride day. They met wonderful members of the community, shared the magic of flight, and most importantly, carried forward the mission of the Commemorative Air Force: to Educate, Inspire, and Honor.
