CAF Honors Medal of Honor Recipient with Flight in Iconic P-51 Mustang
Oshkosh, Wisconsin (July 28, 2025) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) recently had the privilege of honoring a true American hero in a powerful tribute flight. On Saturday, July 26, Master Sergeant Leroy Petry, Medal of Honor recipient and retired U.S. Army Ranger, took to the skies in the CAF’s legendary P-51 Mustang Red Nose. The aircraft, assigned to CAF Airbase Georgia, was piloted by John Currenti.
Petry was in Oshkosh attending EAA AirVenture as a special guest of American Airlines and a participant in the annual Honor Flight—an event that brings together veterans from around the country to recognize their service. While at the event, CAF President David Oliver arranged for the unforgettable Mustang flight, describing it as “an experience [Leroy] wouldn’t forget.”
Adding to the special moment, CAF General Staff member Dan Fordice flew Petry’s son in his privately-owned Mustang Charlotte’s Chariot, creating a shared family memory in the skies over Wisconsin.
Master Sergeant Leroy Arthur Petry, born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is celebrated for his extraordinary bravery during Operation Enduring Freedom. On May 26, 2008, while serving with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment in Paktia Province, Afghanistan, Petry was severely wounded in both legs but continued to fight and lead his team under enemy fire. When a grenade landed near his fellow soldiers, Petry selflessly picked it up to throw it away, saving their lives. The grenade detonated as he released it, severing his right hand.
For his heroic actions, Petry was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in 2011, becoming the second living recipient of the medal for the war in Afghanistan. Remarkably, despite his injuries, Petry reenlisted and continued to serve until his retirement in 2014.
The CAF’s tribute flight stands as a symbol of gratitude and respect—not only for Petry’s courage but also for the service of all veterans. It also reflects the organization’s ongoing mission to honor, inspire, and preserve the stories of America’s military heroes.
