Ray Kinney, Distinguished CAF Leader and Aviator, Has Gone West

Dallas, Texas (December 3, 2025) - The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) mourns the loss of longtime member and General Staff leader Ray Kinney, whose dedication, vision, and love of aviation shaped the organization for more than three decades.

Kinney joined the CAF in 1989 and quickly became one of its most influential advocates. A passionate supporter of World War II aviation history, he served as the lead sponsor of the P-40 Warhawk and FG-1D Corsair, personally promoting both aircraft at airshows nationwide. Through static displays and aerobatic demonstrations, he worked tirelessly to honor the veterans who inspired him—an effort highlighted in 1996 when he helped present the CAF Freedom Award to members of the AVG Flying Tigers.

Beyond his work in the cockpit and on the ramp, Kinney played a central role in shaping the organization’s future. He served as TRARON 1 Lead, conducting formation training clinics for CAF pilots; guided the organization through the complex and emotional process of its name change; and held key leadership roles, including Chairman of the CAF Foundation, member of the Museum Board, and two terms on the General Staff, one as Chief of Staff. Among his many contributions, Kinney’s most lasting legacy is the creation of the Heritage Club, the CAF’s planned-giving program. Kinney also served his country in uniform. From 1961 to 1962, he was a U.S. Navy aircrewman with Navy Squadron VS-29, serving aboard a U.S. aircraft carrier and flying in S2F-1 anti-submarine aircraft.

“Ray’s leadership, generosity, and unwavering belief in our mission have left an imprint that will guide the CAF for decades,” said David Oliver, CAF President/CEO. “He embodied everything this organization stands for—honor, service, and a commitment to preserving history for future generations.”

The CAF extends its sincere condolences to Ray Kinney’s wife Bonnie, his family, friends, and everyone inspired by his work. His legacy will live on through the aircraft he supported, the programs he created, and the organization he helped strengthen.
