Before World War II pilots flew into combat aboard legendary fighters and bombers, they first had to learn how to fly. For thousands of young Americans, that journey began in the open cockpit of a primary trainer.

The Commemorative Air Force's New England Wing is restoring a remarkable piece of aviation history: the first Fairchild PT-23, serial number T42-6001. Built in 1942, the aircraft helped establish a new variation of Fairchild's primary trainer and later served at Thompson-Robbins Field in Arkansas, where young aviation cadets prepared for military flying.
