Online Event During World War II, the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver became a formidable weapon in the Pacific, carrying Navy aviators into combat from the decks of American aircraft carriers. Among the squadrons that flew these powerful dive bombers was Bombing Squadron 13 (VB-13), which served aboard USS Franklin (CV-13).

But behind every aircraft were the men who flew, maintained, and supported it. Their stories reveal the human side of naval aviation, from the challenges of carrier operations to the friendships, sacrifices, and everyday experiences of wartime service.

In this episode of CAF Warbird Tube, we explore VB-13's history, its service aboard USS Franklin, and the personal stories of the men who served with the squadron. Through historical records, photographs, and personal correspondence, we'll examine what life was like for the aviators who took the Helldiver into the Pacific War.

We'll also look at how the Commemorative Air Force's SB2C-5 Helldiver, The Beast, helps preserve this history today. One of only three surviving Helldivers, the aircraft carries markings commemorating USS Franklin, providing a tangible connection to the squadron and the men whose stories deserve to be remembered.
