Airbase Georgia Celebrates VE Day, Life on the Home Front May 10

PEACHTREE CITY, GA. (February 5, 2025) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Base Georgia, the largest World War II flying museum in Georgia and one of the largest in the Southeast, will host a special Open House on Saturday, May 10, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The family-friendly event will commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day and offer attendees a unique opportunity to explore the sights, sounds, and legacy of the Greatest Generation. The Open House will also kick off Armed Forces Week.

“We aim to educate, inspire, and honor,” said Joel Perkins, leader of Airbase Georgia. “This Open House is a meaningful way for us to honor World War II veterans and share the experiences of the millions of Americans who supported the war effort on the Home Front.”

VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) celebrated on May 8th, marks the day in 1945 when Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allied Forces, effectively bringing an end to World War II in Europe. Armed Forces Week is a week-long celebration in the United States that honors the men and women who serve or have served in the various branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Visitors of all ages will be immersed in interactive activities led by dedicated volunteers. From displays that highlight life during the war to hands-on exhibits designed for school-age children, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and efforts made by civilians and servicemembers alike.

For aviation enthusiasts, the Spring Open House will provide a rare chance to see restored vintage warplanes up close, including the legendary P-51 Mustang, FG-1 Corsair and rare SBD Dauntless dive bomber. For those seeking an unforgettable experience, rides in historic aircraft will be available for purchase.

Mark your calendars for an inspiring event that honors the spirit of victory in Europe and pays tribute to those who defended freedom. Whether you’re a history buff, a family seeking an educational outing, or simply curious about vintage aviation, the Airbase Georgia Spring Open House will offer something for everyone.
