Help Return Iconic B-29 FIFI to the Sky
DALLAS, TX – June 4, 2025 – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) provided an update today on the iconic B-29 Superfortress, FIFI, engine repairs. Earlier this year, the group announced that it had to delay the start of the 2025 AirPower History Tour following the discovery of a critical engine issue. The aircraft, one of only two B-29s in the world still flying, is undergoing urgent repairs—but she won’t return to the skies without support from the public.
At the heart of FIFI’s thunderous engines and gleaming silver skin is something more powerful than technology—it’s the passion of people. Volunteers across generations have poured their time, sweat, and skill into keeping this rare warbird alive. This isn’t just maintenance—it’s a promise kept to history, to the veterans who flew her, and to future generations who deserve to hear her story in the roar of her engines.
This April, during routine pre-flight engine run-ups, mechanics discovered a malfunction with the impeller spinner discharge valve, a small but essential part of the Curtiss-Wright R-3350 supercharger system. After consulting with experienced overhaul shops, it was determined that engines #2 and #4 required immediate removal and repair.
Thanks to the speed and skill of the B-29/B-24 Squadron’s maintenance crew, both engines were removed, crated, and shipped to California within 3.5 days. Repairs are now underway at Vintage Radials, led by renowned engine expert Mike Nixon. The valve systems are being rebuilt, tested on a flow bench, and reassembled to manufacturer specifications. Each engine will undergo test bed runs before being reinstalled.
“I’m incredibly proud of our maintenance team and the level of professionalism they bring to this work,” said Matthew Hood, Maitenance Officer for the B-29/B-24 Squadron. “They treat FIFI with the reverence she deserves—every inspection, every repair is done with deep respect for the aircraft and for what she represents. This team takes their responsibility seriously, and it shows in the care and precision they bring to every task.” *FIFI’*s grounding is temporary, but the financial demands of this repair effort are steep. The CAF has launched a fundraising appeal to help offset the costs of the repairs and support the aircraft’s swift return to flight.
“We truly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work through these necessary repairs,” said Jeremy Lashbrook, B-29/B-24 Squadron Leader. “Keeping an aircraft like FIFI flying isn’t easy—it takes time, resources, and most of all, the unwavering support of our fans. We simply couldn’t do this without the devotion of the people who believe in our mission and in preserving the legacy of the Greatest Generation.”

Let’s bring FIFI home—and back to the air.
