B-29 FIFI One Step Closer to Flying Again
Dallas (June 20, 2025) – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is pleased to share an important update on the ongoing maintenance project for one of the world’s most iconic warbirds—B-29 Superfortress FIFI. Thanks to the skill and dedication of the CAF maintenance team and the generous support of donors across the country, the aircraft is now one step closer to returning to the skies.
Earlier this year, a routine pre-flight inspection revealed a critical issue with a component of FIFI’s supercharger system—the impeller spinner discharge valve on engines #2 and #4. Both engines were promptly removed and shipped to Vintage Radials in Tehachapi, California, where legendary radial engine expert Mike Nixon and his team performed repairs and full test bench runs.
The test runs were a success. Both engines safely returned to Dallas on June 16, escorted personally by Doug Platten and Pat Clayton. Since their arrival, the maintenance crew has wasted no time: the engines are already reinstalled, propellers are mounted, and engine run-ups are scheduled to begin Saturday, June 21, at the Henry B. Tippie National Aviation Education Center, located at Dallas Executive Airport.
Upcoming Appearances Adjusted
While FIFI’s team is eager to return to the 2025 summer tour, time is needed for post-maintenance testing and aircrew flight training. As a result, upcoming appearances in Lexington, Kentucky (June 28–29), and Evansville, Indiana (July 2–6) have been cancelled. FIFI is now scheduled to resume her tour at Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport in Ohio (July 9–13) and will make a major appearance at EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh later in July. Fundraising Goal Reached—and Expanded
To help cover the unexpected maintenance costs, the CAF launched a fundraising campaign earlier this month with a goal of raising $50,000. Thanks to an overwhelming response from supporters nationwide, that goal was met in just days.
“Your generosity—and the heartfelt notes that came with your donations—have been a powerful reminder of how much FIFI means to people,” said Squadron Leader Jeremy Lashbrook. “It’s been humbling and deeply motivating.”
Encouraged by that support, the CAF has raised the bar with a new stretch goal of $100,000. Supporters can still contribute at: https://fundrazr.com/FIFI_Flies.
A Living Link to the Greatest Generation
FIFI is one of only two airworthy B-29 Superfortresses in the world. She serves as a flying tribute to the men and women who built, maintained, and flew these massive bombers during World War II. With every tour stop, she educates new generations, inspires aviation enthusiasts, and honors the legacy of the Greatest Generation.
