B-29 Superfortress FIFI Delays Start of 2025 AirPower History Tour for Engine Repairs
Dallas, TX — (April 29, 2025) — The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) B-29/B-24 Squadron announced today that the start of the 2025 AirPower History Tour will be delayed as essential maintenance is completed on FIFI, one of the world’s only flying B-29 Superfortresses.
During preseason engine checks, the Squadron’s maintenance team identified necessary repairs to engines 2 and 4. In keeping with their commitment to safety and stewardship, Squadron leaders made the decision to delay FIFI’s first tour stop to ensure the aircraft remains airworthy and safe for both passengers and crew.
"We understand how disappointing this news is for our volunteers, supporters, and aviation fans," said Jeremy Lashbrook, B-29/B-24 Squadron Leader. "But our guiding principle remains clear: If the job is done right, it is safe. We owe it to the brave veterans who flew these aircraft — and to future generations — to ensure FIFI continues to fly with the highest standards of safety and care."
The maintenance team, led by Matthew Hood, moved quickly to remove the affected engines and transport them to California for repairs, saving time and expenses. Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers like Doug Platten and the Squadron’s dedicated maintenance crew, work is already well underway. The engines are expected to be repaired within the next month, and FIFI is now scheduled to return to flight for the Lexington, Kentucky tour stop beginning June 25, 2025.
The delay, however, carries significant financial challenges. Costs for major repairs combined with the loss of early-season tour revenue have created an urgent need for community support.
The Squadron invites all supporters to help ensure the mission continues. Donations are critical to cover repair expenses and keep these historic aircraft flying across America, where they educate, inspire, and honor new generations.

"Now more than ever, we need everyone to come together — whether it's volunteering your time, pitching in at tour stops, or making a donation. It truly takes a village to keep history alive."
The CAF and the B-29/B-24 Squadron thank all volunteers, supporters, and fans for their continued dedication and passion for preserving America's aviation heritage.
