CAF Minnesota Wing Spring 2023 Update

South St. Paul, MN (April 14, 2023) - The CAF Minnesota Wing, based at the old Navy Training Airfield, Fleming Field, has a very busy spring schedule and many projects keeping the members active. Their current restoration project, the N2S-1 Stearman, is in the process of returning to airworthy status. The N2S-1 is the Navy version of the Boeing Stearman Model 75. The open-cockpit airplane was a primary trainer and introduced prospective pilots to flying. Those who earned their wings progressed to the more advanced trainers, such as the BT-13 Vultee and T-6/SNJ Texan.

The N2S-1 is in the middle of the restoration process and awaiting an overhauled engine. Once completed, the aircraft will be painted yellow with U.S. Navy markings, just as the aircraft would have looked while being used for training at Fleming Field. The Minnesota Wing is excited to restore this airplane with the same markings of aircraft flown at Fleming Field during World War II. By sharing their local story and how it translated to pilots flying across the country and the world during the War, the public will be more interested in this aviation history and the people who participated.
