CAF Pilot Scholar CJ Volpe Makes History

Lancaster, TX (February 25, 2025) – History is being made in the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dallas/Fort Worth Wing, as CJ Volpe, a determined and passionate young aviator, reaches a groundbreaking milestone. As a CAF Pilot Scholarship recipient, Volpe recently earned his private pilot license and successfully passed his initial 602 check flight—solidifying his place among the next generation of warbird pilots. But that’s not all. In a first-of-its-kind achievement, Volpe became the first CAF Pilot Scholarship recipient who achieved his private pilot license through the program and became a CAF aircraft sponsor.  Volpe is now a CAF aircraft sponsor of the DFW Wing’s T-41 Mescalero, making him the first individual to achieve this milestone.

Volpe’s success is a testament to the impact of the CAF Pilot Scholarship, a program generously funded by the Ray Foundation. Designed to open the skies to aspiring pilots, this scholarship provides young aviation enthusiasts ages 16-19 with up to $12,000 to support attaining a private pilots license. More than just a scholarship, this initiative embodies the legacy of James Ray, who firmly believed that aviation fosters discipline, character, and confidence—traits that shape strong leaders both in and out of the cockpit.

At its core, the CAF Pilot Scholarship program is driven by the passion and dedication of local CAF Units, who play a pivotal role in identifying and mentoring young pilots. Recipients don’t just learn to fly—they become part of the CAF family, volunteering within their units, documenting their progress, and embracing a rigorous requirement to complete flight training within 12 months. It’s a challenge that demands perseverance, but the rewards are limitless for those with the determination to see it through.

CJ Volpe’s journey is proof that with hard work, support, and an unwavering love for aviation, dreams can take flight. Are you or someone you know ready to follow in his footsteps? Visit www.CAFscholarships.org to discover how to qualify and start your path toward making aviation history.
