Dog Tags and House Keys: Creating Community for Veterans
(Midlothian, TX, May 20, 2025) - Making the transition from military service to civilian life isn’t easy. Many veterans face a range of challenges, from finding stable housing to adjusting emotionally and professionally. That’s where Dog Tags and House Keys comes in. This Texas-based nonprofit is doing more than building homes—they’re building communities designed to support veterans in every part of their post-service journey.
At the center of their work is The Barracks, a planned tiny home community that will offer veterans more than just a roof over their heads. It’s a place where they can find connection, a sense of purpose, and a fresh start. The Barracks will provide wraparound services like job placement, spiritual and emotional support, and mentorship—all tailored to help veterans transition successfully into civilian life.
Their goal is ambitious: to house over 200 veterans within two years of breaking ground. The first community is set for Midlothian, Texas, a town known for its strong support of veterans. The first year of the project will focus on preparing the site and building accessible homes, with plans to open the doors by the end of year two.
What makes Dog Tags and House Keys stand out is their holistic approach. They recognize that veterans need more than just a place to live—they need a place to heal, grow, and feel at home. That’s why their model blends housing with services that support every aspect of a veteran’s life: emotional, spiritual, and professional.
The organization was founded by Ricky Chaffin Jr., whose deep sense of duty and family military background inspired the project. He teamed up with Army veterans Bryan Piper and Nick Laurent, bringing together a team with firsthand understanding of the struggles veterans face—and a shared vision for how to help.
“With my heart, blood, sweat, and tears invested in this mission, I am dedicated to ensuring that veterans receive the support and resources they deserve. Through Operation Dog Tags and House Keys, we aim to honor their sacrifices and make a meaningful difference in their lives, embodying the spirit of service that has defined our journey. I am working tirelessly alongside my business partners to build multiple communities that will house veterans as they transition to civilian life,” said founder Ricky Chaffin Jr.
Dog Tags and House Keys is a powerful reminder that real change starts with community. Their work shows what’s possible when we go beyond thank-yous and focus on real, long-term support for those who’ve served.
