Inspiring the Next Generation: Aerospace Education Summer Camp

Conroe, TX (August 22, 2025) – This summer, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Gulf Coast Wing led by Charles Scott Williams ignited imaginations and sparked lifelong passions through its Aerospace Education Summer Camp. Over the course of five action-packed days, 11 students immersed themselves in aviation history, cutting-edge aerospace technology, and hands-on experiences that few young people ever get to encounter. The mission? To open doors to aviation’s future while preparing today’s youth with the skills, confidence, and inspiration to carry that legacy forward.

A Week Packed

The camp opened with purpose: Advanced First Aid and CPR training at the Klein Fire Department, giving cadets life-saving skills alongside their aviation lessons. From there, they stepped into the future with UAV flight training under CAF member Michael Hart—sparking excitement as many piloted for the first time.

Day two expanded horizons with a behind-the-scenes tour at NASA Flight Operations, a stop at the Rutan Aircraft Flying Experience with CEO Ryszard Zadow, and a visit to the U.S. Coast Guard’s MH-65 Dolphin helicopter in Houston.

Midweek brought the biggest challenge: the FAA Private Pilot written exam, where four cadets earned endorsements to take the real test. They capped the day with orientation flights in a Cessna 310 and an inspiring career talk from Lt. Col. Mark Salvati, U.S. Army Test Pilot.

The adventure continued with a VIP look inside George Bush Intercontinental Airport (KIAH), where cadets saw how one of the nation’s busiest airports runs. The week ended in style—some sitting for the FAA exam, others experiencing the thrill of a Blackhawk helicopter demonstration at David Wayne Hooks Airport.

Powered by Volunteers, Fueled by Passion

None of this would have been possible without the dedication of CAF members and volunteers. Nancy Kwiecien guided cadets through ground school and scholarship opportunities. Tim Kaufman, with decades of mentorship, introduced them to the intricacies of aircraft engines. The CAF Marshalling Detachment, in their iconic orange shirts, taught ramp safety. Photographer Kevin Hong ensured that every moment was captured, preserving memories and inspiring future cadets.

This network of support showed campers that aviation isn’t just about flying machines—it’s about community, discipline, and carrying forward a legacy of service.

A Model for Cities Everywhere

What makes the CAF Gulf Coast Wing’s program remarkable is how replicable it is. With creativity and local partnerships, similar camps could thrive across the country. Imagine:

  • Local fire departments and first responders teaching cadets emergency skills, just as Klein Fire Department did.
  • Nearby airports or aerospace companies opening their doors for behind-the-scenes tours, from control towers to maintenance hangars.
  • Local universities or flight schools offering introductory UAV or ground school sessions.
  • Military installations, reserve units, or Coast Guard stations showcasing aircraft, helicopters, and service opportunities.
  • Volunteers and aviation enthusiasts providing mentorship, just as the CAF community does.
  • Every city has untapped resources—from municipal airports to aviation museums—that could become the foundation for camps like this. By connecting youth with aviation role models and hands-on opportunities, communities can inspire the next generation while preserving the legacy of flight.

More Than Aviation

At its heart, the Aerospace Education Summer Camp wasn’t just about flying airplanes. It was about building confidence, sparking passion, and opening doors. Whether sitting at the controls of a drone, flying in a Cessna, or watching a Blackhawk tear across the sky, these cadets experienced moments that could shape their lives forever.

The CAF Gulf Coast Wing has proven what’s possible when a community comes together for education, inspiration, and aviation. With imagination and commitment, other cities can carry the torch and create their own unforgettable programs—ensuring the story of flight continues to inspire for generations to come.
