"Ready4Duty" Wins Big at the Royal International Air Tattoo

Gloucestershire, United Kingdom (July 24,2024) – It’s been an incredible year for the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) DFW Wing and their aircraft, R4D Ready 4 Duty. After being grounded in 2024 by an engine problem that kept the aircraft from attending the 80th anniversary of D-Day in France, the crew made a vow—to try again and bring Ready 4 Duty to Europe in 2025 for the 80th anniversary of VE Day. From that promise, the Navy to Victory Tour was born, taking the aircraft across Europe to honor the legacy of the Greatest Generation.

One of the notable events on the tour was the Royal International Air Tattoo(RIAT) in the United Kingdom—widely recognized as the world’s largest military airshow. This year’s event drew more than 175,000 attendees and showcased over 200 aircraft from around the world. In addition to the spectacular aerial demonstrations and impressive static displays, RIAT hosts an award ceremony recognizing excellence among both flying and static display participants.

CAF Colonel members Dan Gleason and Henry Simpson were on hand to represent the DFW Wing and receive one of the event’s highest honors: The Northrop Grumman Trophy, awarded to the runner-up in the prestigious Concours d' Elegance competition–a showcase of aircraft judged on presentation, authenticity, and overall impact. The term "Concours d' Elegance" translates to “competition of elegance,” and honors aircraft that truly stand out in the field.

This recognition marks a milestone for the CAF DFW Wing, Ready 4 Duty returns to RIAT for the first time since 1985—when it was honored with a top award. Forty years later, the aircraft once again earned international distinction.

“To be able to fly the flag for the CAF at a premier aviation showcase and receive a major award is particularly special, as it comes four decades after Ready 4 Duty last visited RIAT,” said CAF Col Henry Simpson.

The international spotlight on Ready 4 Duty is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who maintain and operate this historic aircraft. "For Ready 4 Duty to be honored at the world’s largest military aviation event—competing alongside aircraft from international air arms and commercial companies—is an outstanding achievement,” Simpson added.

Receiving the Northrop Grumman Trophy is more than just a prestigious accolade. It’s a powerful affirmation that the CAF’s mission to "Keep 'Em Flying" is being heard around the world.

“This year's successful Navy to Victory Tour, capped by recognition at RIAT, helps ease the disappointment of missing last year's D-Day 80 Tour. It’s an honor to introduce the CAF to so many new people,” said CAF DFW Wing Unit Leader Chris Volpe.
